Frequently Asked Questions

SketchUp is a 3D modeling program for a wide range of applications like architectural, interior design, landscape architecture, civil and mechanical engineering, film, and video game design.

It is also available as a web-based application, SketchUp Free, a freeware version, SketchUp Make, and a paid version with additional functionality, SketchUp Pro.

System Requirements
Full system requirements for all versions on SketchUp Pro can be found here

Installation and Authorisation
Full details on how to download, install and authorise SketchUp Pro can be found here

Troubleshooting Licence Error Messages
From time to time you may have difficulty authorising your licence. A list of the most common error messages you may see upon trying to authorise the licence, along with the steps to resolve can be found here

Additional Troubleshooting - Single User
We recommend the following steps if you are having difficulty authorising a licence:

  • Check you have an internet connection; you will need a connection to authorize SketchUp
  • Check you have downloaded the correct version of SketchUp Pro.
  • Ensure no leading or trailing blank spaces are being copied across when copying and pasting the license information.
  • If still unsuccessful, Copy and paste license details into a plain text editor (like Notepad) and then copy and paste from there into SketchUp.

Additional Troubleshooting - Network
A standard network licence is now installed just like a single user licence - although there is one important caveat to allow the authorisation to be successful: Ports 5053 and 50530 must be open on the router on each workstation for your network license to work. No server installs necessary.

For any authorisation issues, please follow the same steps as listed for a single user licence above. Double check that you have the required ports open.

The licensing servers are currently at the following URLs:

  • license1.sketchup.com/
  • license2.sketchup.com/
  • license3.sketchup.com/
  • license4.sketchup.com/
  • license5.sketchup.com/
  • license6.sketchup.com/

These URLs currently resolve to 2 IP addresses:

54.69.8.81

54.69.3.2

Ports may be opened only for these addresses if desired.

SketchUp can be used on

  • Windows 7 & Later
  • OS X 10.9 and later
  • iOS
  • Android

Removing a licence / Moving to a new computer SketchUp Pro single-user licenses are "locked" to your computer when SketchUp Pro is licenced. If you purchase a new computer and you want to transfer your SketchUp licence to that new machine, you need to remove your license from your old computer first. To remove the licence, please try these steps:

  • Open SketchUp Pro on the *old* computer
  • Select "Help" > "License" (Windows) or "SketchUp" > "License" (Mac OSX)
  • Click the "Remove License" license - you will see a confirmation message.
  • Click the "Remove License" button - your license will be removed. Now you can authorize SketchUp Pro on your new computer using your same serial number and authorization code (i.e. license information).

In addition, they must satisfy criteria on experience such as a certain minimum number of hours of integral and supervised practice with clients.

When will I receive my SketchUp Pro 2020 serial number and authorization code?

Of course, via e-mail! You receive your codes from the reseller where you purchased your SketchUp Pro license and / or SketchUp Pro Maintenance.

Is macOS Mojave now officially supported?

- Yes, macOS Mojave is now officially supported.

What will happen with my SketchUp Pro 2020 license?

It keeps running on the machine where it is activated. SketchUp Pro 2020 runs beside it. Pay attention:

  • If you upgrade a SketchUp Pro Network license to 2020, you cannot start version 2020 after 60 days;
  • If you upgrade a SketchUp Pro Standalone license to 2020, then 2020 can no longer be activated on new systems as soon as you activate the 2020 license somewhere. If 2020 is still installed somewhere, it will run on forever.
Are all my plugins still working?

Contact your plug-in supplier to see if an update is required. The plugins will of course continue to run in your old version of SketchUp Pro.

Note: Make sure you enter the correct e-mail address, you can add but not delete. A SketchUp Subscription is personal, so in the name of the user. Do you need more flexibility? Then buy a network license.

Manage your SketchUp subscription

You can have a subscription for SketchUp Pro and SketchUp Studio. If you have paid for the subscription, it is valid for the duration stated on your invoice. This is usually a year.

  • You can check the status of your subscription from SketchUp. To do this you must do the following:
  • In the [Menu] select Help-Manage License
  • Select the Subscription tab. As long as your subscription is active, this will be indicated in the window. There is also indicated when the subscription ends. (expires)
  • In addition, even more information is displayed via the button at the bottom left (Manage License)

Authorize SketchUp as a user

You must have internet access to authorize SketchUp Pro 2015 or later. For the techies among us; if you authorize SketchUp Pro, SketchUp communicates with the authorization server via the standard ports 80 and 443 . If you use a proxy or firewall , allow SketchUp Pro to communicate on those ports to the * .sketchup.com domain.

Authorizing SketchUp with a network license is no different than authorizing it with a single user license. Although a network license can be authorized in the same way as a single-user license, there is one important reservation for successful use of the network license: Ports 5053 and 50530 must be open while actively using a network license . Consult your network administrator if these ports are not open.

Authorize SketchUp in a network as Administrator

If you want to distribute SketchUp over a larger network, you can use the MSI file or use a disk imaging package such as Norton Ghost or Deep Freeze. In both ways of both distributed installation strategies, you can simplify the authorization process by including a file that fills in the serial number and authorization code for the users, so they don't have to type themselves. SketchUp Pro will automatically attempt to authorize on behalf of the user.

To use this procedure:

  • 1. Ensure that SketchUp Pro 2015 or later is installed on all computers.
  • 2. Create a file called activation_info.txt . You must use a plain text editor, such as Notepad (Microsoft Windows) or TextMate (Mac OS X).
  • 3. In that file, type your network serial number and authorization code in the following format: {"serial_number": "YOUR SERIAL NUMBER", "auth_code": "YOUR AUTHORIZATION CODE", "allow_reactivation": true}
  • 4. Save the file and distribute to the following location on each machine:
  • Windows - C: \ ProgramData \ SketchUp \ SketchUp 201x Note that it is the hidden ProgramData folder, not the more famous Program Files folder .

OS X - / Library / Application Support / SketchUp 201xNote that this is the root level library, not the user library. You must create the SketchUp 201x folder yourself. There is no default SketchUp 201x folder in the root-level folder / Library / Application.

  • 5. Start SketchUp on every machine or ask your users to open SketchUp Pro.
  • 6. In the SketchUp Welcome dialog box, click the License tab . The serial number and authorization code must now be pre-entered in the fields with * symbols, so that the user does not have to type anything. SketchUp Pro will then automatically send the hidden license information to the authorization server. Once the license information is validated, SketchUp will download a unique license file to the user's computer.
